Press Release, Ajman, 22nd of May 2017- HH Sheikh Humaid bin Ammar Al Nuaimi inaugurated Thumbay Group Healthcare Division’s latest addition to its healthcare facilities in Ajman; Thumbay Elite Clinic and Thumbay Elite Pharmacy, on Sunday, 21st May 2017.

HH Sheikh Humaid bin Ammar Al Nuaimi cut the ribbon during an official ceremony held in the presence of Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group, Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President of the Healthcare Division of Thumbay Group and other members of Thumbay Group Board. The Group’s decision to add these two facilities to offer patients highest quality healthcare services in the Emirate of Ajman and to increase the coverage of the Thumbay network in health and academic hospitals, specialized clinics, and medical research centers across the UAE.

After the official inauguration, HH Sheikh Humaid bin Ammar Al Nuaimi toured the new complex and received a detailed summary of the innovative services that the Thumbay Clinics and Pharmacy will provide to patients. After that, he attended a presentation focusing on the medical techniques, specialized departments and clinics included under the umbrella of Thumbay Elite. Gulf Medical University Stakeholders Forum Held

The Stakeholders Forum of Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, the leading private medical university in the region owned and operated by Thumbay Group UAE, met and discussed the strategic plans and future directions at the University campus on Saturday, 13th May 2017. The meeting had representatives of internal and external stakeholders including officials from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Higher Education, educationists, healthcare professionals, faculty members, parents and student representatives. The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Haidar Al Yousuf – Director of Health Funding, DHA.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor of GMU said that the objective of the meeting was to facilitate the sharing of ideas between GMU’s stakeholders, to realize the vision of its Founder and President Mr. Thumbay Moideen, as one of the best universities in health profession education, research and healthcare. “In the next few years, we intend to take GMU to another level. We have already developed three institutes for world-class research and training, within GMU: Thumbay Institute of Precision Medicine and Translational Research (TIPM&TR), The Thumbay Institute of Population Health and The Thumbay Institute of Healthcare Workforce Development and Leadership. The 550-bed academic hospital (350 beds in the first phase), the 60-chair dental hospital as well as the advanced rehabilitation center inside the GMU campus are expected to be completed next year,” he said.

Presenting the vision statement and mission of GMU, Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, Provost of GMU described the university as “a Network of Academic Health Centers with Intramural Centers of Excellence.” The participants later toured the University, experiencing its world-class teaching and learning facilities, the Innovation and Research Center, the advanced research facilities, simulated training center, etc. They also reviewed and discussed the present vision and mission of the colleges of GMU, and proposed recommendations.

In his address of the participants, Dr. Haidar Al Yousuf said that building sustainable health systems was one of the greatest challenges for present day healthcare institutions. “Sustainability in daily practices must be a priority area for healthcare professionals.”

Thanking the participants for their recommendations, Prof. Hossam Hamdy said that GMU was keen to enhance the learning experience of its students, transforming them into world-class healthcare professionals.

Gulf Medical University Ties into Transnational Collaboration with University of Ghana

Gulf Medical University (GMU), the most sought-after private medical university in the Gulf region, has introduced the Associate Degree in Preclinical Sciences (ADPCS) program, wherein the students will do the 3-year pre-clinical phase at GMU, followed by the 3-year clinical phase at Ghana and receive a medical degree MBChB from the University of Ghana.

Commenting on the transnational collaborative program, Prof. Hossam Hamdy, the Chancellor of Gulf Medical University said, “To meet the ever-increasing demand for medical professionals, GMU is facilitating the students to carry out pre-clinical studies in GMU. The students will be registered for the MBChB program at the collaborating University, University of Ghana, which will be awarding the final degree.”

The total number of seats for the collaborative program is 25, out of which a limited number of seats are available for desirous students. Students wishing to apply for the same should have completed 12 years of schooling, and should also fulfill the other pre-requisites for admission into the program.

The award was received from His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Deputy Ruler of Dubai by Mr. Suraj Padmanabhan – Manager, Talent Acquisition and Mr. Ahamed Koya Sidhiq – Manager, Human Resources of Thumbay Group, at the 23rd Business Excellence Awards ceremony held at the Dubai World Trade Centre on Wednesday, 3rd May 2017.

The awards function was held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, by the Department of Economic Development (DED) in Dubai, to honour the organizations being conferred with the Dubai Quality Award, the Dubai Human Development Award and the Dubai Service Excellence Scheme for the 2016 cycle of assessment. The awards are a coveted benchmark for quality and business excellence in the country.

Gulf Medical University Chancellor Prof. Hossam Hamdy Announces Plans to Introduce Pharmacovigilance in PharmD Curriculum

‘The Second Emirates International Conference on Combating Medicinal Products Counterfeiting’ was organized by the UAE Ministry of Health & Prevention at Dubai on 1st May 2017. Prof. Hossam Hamdy, the Chancellor of Gulf Medical University, Ajman UAE, attended the conference and also met and exchanged ideas with H.E. Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri – Assistant Undersecretary for MOH Policy & Licenses, Ministry of Health & Prevention, Dubai, who was also the Chairman of the conference. The Chancellor discussed with the conference chairman H.E. Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, the importance of teaching pharmacovigilance and pharma laws at the University level to empower the students evolve as professionals capable of checking illegalities in the sector.

 

Impressed by Prof. Hossam Hamdy’s suggestion, H.E. Dr. Amin Al Amiri mentioned the same to the audience, during the chairman’s address of the conference. Prof. Hossam Hamdy also made a formal announcement of Gulf Medical University’s plans to introduce Pharmacovigilance as a subject of study for the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) Course offered by its College of Pharmacy. “It is important for the pharma professionals of tomorrow to be attentive and alert as to monitor and report the undesirable effects of drugs including issues related to drug abuse and misuse.  So, Gulf Medical University will be introducing pharmacovigilance as a compulsory subject for our Pharm D students,” he explained.

The 2-day conference also witnessed the announcement of an updated federal pharmaceutical law with new procedures to seize counterfeit, controlled and semi-controlled medicines, expected to be in place by the end of the year. This was revealed by H.E. Dr. Amin Al Amiri at the conference.

Thumbay Medical Tourism participated in the Arabian Travel Market in a big way. We have attracted a lot of interest among the visitors. We understand the changing dynamics of medical tourism and we are learning to adapt, says Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay.

As part of the strategic plans, Thumbay Medical Tourism expects to have about 1000 patients as medical tourists per day in the next 5 – 6 years. Over 47 representatives of Satguru Travel & Tourism from 18 countries visited the Gulf Medical University and Thumbay Hospitals to apprise themselves of the world class facilities and services that are offered by the institution and the academic network of hospitals. They interacted with the academic leadership, hospital management and the Director Thumbay Medical Tourism and their team. The representatives were impressed with the latest technology being used in the hospitals to treat the patients.

Thumbay Hospital – Fujairah, conducted a free health check-up camp (blood sugar, blood pressure and BMI checkup) including free consultation by Dr. Rafal Badri ( Consultant-General Surgery), Dr.Zeeshan Khan(General Practitioner) and Ms. Zaveria Qureshi (Nutritionist), at the General Directorate of Residence & Foreigners Affairs Fujairah, on 11th April 2017.
