Kids from Butterflies Nursery visited Thumbay Clinic UAQ

Students of Butterflies Nursery, Umm Al Quwain visited Thumaby Clinic on February 14, 2017. The visit was undertaken to familiarize the children about the role of doctors and their contributions to community wellness. There were 23 children in total, and they also attended health and hygiene related sessions with the pediatrician as well as the general practitioner of Thumbay Clinic – Umm Al Quwain.

Thanking Thumbay Clinic for facilitating the visit, the management of Butterflies Nursery congratulated the efforts and activities undertaken by the clinic for promoting health awareness. Gifts were given to the visiting students and accompanying staff of the nursery, by Thumbay Clinic.

Free medical services offered at the camp included Free Doctor consultation, Free Blood Pressure, Free Blood Sugar, Free BMI tests. Dr.Raheela Ahmad(General Practitioner) was available for consultation in the camp.

Free medical services offered at the camp included Free Dental Consultation, Free Blood Pressure, Free Blood Sugar, Free BMI Tests.

President of Dental Council of India Dr. Dibyendu Mazumder Visits Gulf Medical University Ajman

A high-level delegation of the Dental Council of India, led by the President, Dr. Dibyendu Mazumder visited Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman on Wednesday, 8th February 2017. The delegation was received at the University by Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder, President of Board of Governors of GMU, in the presence of Prof. Gita Ashok Raj – GMU Provost and the Deans of various colleges under GMU.

The delegation was presented with the vision and mission of GMU, and they toured the educational and research facilities in the campus, particularly the Dental College and its labs including the Simi Lab, as well as the various medical labs of the University, the Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH) and the Center for Advanced Biomedical Reasearch & Innovation. They also visited the different ongoing projects in the campus, like the 350-bed academic hospital, 60-chair dental hospital and the rehabilitation center.

The delegation held a discussion with the Academic Team of GMU’s College of Dentistry, on prospective opportunities for mutual cooperation. They also visited Thumbay Dental Hospital in Dubai, which is affiliated to GMU.

Dr. Dibyendu Mazumder expressed his admiration for the unique vision and strategies, and the facilities of GMU. “The facilities at GMU are truly impressive. The University has many innovative teaching and training facilities like CASH and CABRI, as well as a very good library. We are happy to learn about the new 60-chair dental hospital being built in the University campus, and the vision to make it a Center of Excellence and a state-of-the-art facility for clinical training,” he said. The delegation thanked Mr. Thumbay Moideen for inviting them, and for the warm hospitality.

Thumbay Labs, the leading network of private diagnostic labs in the region owned and operated by Thumbay Group – UAE, offers a wide portfolio of advanced tests, and is regarded as one of the most trusted names in diagnostic testing. It is the largest chain of private diagnostic labs in the UAE, and is among the largest service providers in terms of the range of tests available, the number of diagnostic tests done and revenue. With the recent College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation of its laboratories in Dubai and Fujairah, in addition to its central facility in Ajman which had been accredited earlier, Thumbay Labs has become one of the largest chains of CAP accredited private labs in the region.

Gulf Medical University’s Surgical Training Center Collaborates with Stryker to Train Middle Eastern Surgeons in Innovative Hip Replacement Surgery Techniques

US-based Stryker, a global orthopedic implants and medical equipment provider, visited Gulf Medical University (GMU) on Feb 4, 2017 to organize a workshop on advanced hip replacement surgery titled, ‘Hip Replacement: Primary and Revision Course’. More than 12 leading Middle Eastern surgeons participated in the workshop organized by leading international orthopedic surgeons, Professor Michael Nogler from the Medical University of Innsbruck (Austria) and Professor Mohammad Ghazavi from the Scarborough Hospital (Toronto, Canada).

Speaking about the workshop, Prof. Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor, GMU, said, “We are delighted to work with Stryker to host this unique platform that provides an opportunity to fine-tune the knowledge and skills of medical professionals in the UAE and GCC countries. Gulf Medical University’s Surgical Training Center is equipped with the latest technology and has ten surgical platforms providing advanced surgical training in all the surgical specialties. Today’s training course is one of the top programs offered and supervised by leading international orthopedic surgeons from Canada and Austria.”

The extensive workshop began with an exclusive demonstration on fresh frozen cadavers, with two professors showcasing innovative new surgery techniques that allow patients to experience lesser pain, quicker recovery and improved mobility. Meanwhile, the participating surgeons from the Middle Eastern hospitals were given an opportunity to interact with the surgical team and seek answers to their queries, as the surgeries progressed.

On selecting GMU as the venue to host the program, Violeta Velef, Marketing Manager Middle East of Stryker said: “Our choice of GMU for this training program is largely due to the high-end cadaver lab facility here, which is quite rare in the region. The new Board of Governors (BoG) of the Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, headed by the Founder, President of the BoG Mr. Thumbay Moideen, met on Saturday, February 4, 2017, to deliberate on the future strategic plans while reminiscing the accomplishments of the year gone by.

Also attending the meeting were Prof. Hossam Hamdy – Chancellor of GMU and Prof. Gita Ashok Raj – Provost of GMU. Other members of the board include Prof. Richard Raymond – President & CEO of Medical College of Wiscosin, USA; Dr. Lorenzo. M. Leoni – Managing Partner TiVenture (Agrie Invest), Switzerland; Dr. Mohammed Amin Al Awadi  – Assistant Undersecretary for Training & Planning – Ministry of Health, Bahrain; Prof. Nadia Badrawi – Vice – President and Founder – ANQAHE , Cairo, Egypt; Dr. Tayeb A. The BoG discussed in the strategic plans to make GMU one of the leading international universities in education, healthcare and research. “The University is expanding its networks of affiliated Thumbay academic hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and diagnostic labs. The Thumbay academic hospital network will have a total of 1000 beds in the UAE, 1500 beds in India and 750 beds elsewhere in the Gulf and Africa by 2022, taking the total number of hospitals to 15 worldwide. The Gulf Medical University – Ajman will soon become a full-fledged University with Engineering and Management courses in addition to Medicine. The Group also plans to open three new University campuses across 3 different countries. By 2022, Thumbay Group plans to add 25 Thumbay Labs and 100 Thumbay Pharmacies,” explained Mr. Thumbay Moideen, detailing on the strategic objectives.

Prof. Hossam Hamdy, the Chancellor said that GMU was undergoing a major transformation, that new strategic objectives have been identified and the expansion plans aim to develop the University into the first private Academic Health System in the region. “Our transformation into an Academic Health System will not only impact the health of the community, but it will also contribute in a big way to advances in education, healthcare and research, in addition to significantly improving the quality of patient care,” he added.

The camp offered free blood sugar, blood pressure and BMI tests and free consultation by Dr.Pragish Prakash – Internal Medicine Specialist and Dr. Santy Antony Pottokaran(General Practitioner) . Several people in the hypermarket availed the services.

Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman had the pleasure of hosting a high-level delegation from Finland led by the Honorable Ms. Pirkko Mattila, Minister of Social Affairs and Health for Finland on Wednesday, February 1, 2017. The delegation included H.E. Ms. Riitta Swan, Ambassador of Finland and a host of other esteemed dignitaries from the healthcare sector, education and business industries.

The delegation was received by Mr. Thumbay Moideen – Founder, President of Board of Governors of GMU, Prof. Hossam Hamdy – Chancellor of GMU, Prof. Gita Ashok Raj – GMU Provost and the Deans of various colleges under GMU. The delegation was presented with the vision and mission of GMU, and they toured the educational and research facilities in the campus, including the different ongoing projects of the hospitals and medical centers in the campus.

The delegates thanked the University leadership for the reception, and expressed admiration for GMU’s facilities, programs and future strategic directions. They also discussed possible of areas of collaboration with GMU and its affiliated Thumbay network of academic hospitals and clinics. The business leaders held detailed deliberation with the academic leadership of GMU led by Prof. Hossam Hamdy, seeking possible avenues of cooperation with regard to GMU’s expanding infrastructure and healthcare services network, with special emphasis on collaborations in training programs as well as benefiting from the experience of Finnish doctors and healthcare professionals.

Speaking at the conclusion of the visit, Hon. Ms. Pirkko Mattila said, “We had some very promising discussions today between some of the Finnish companies, healthcare professionals and educators, and the leadership of GMU. I am very honored to be here and what I saw here has been quite impressive. While everyone else is talking about technology, digitalization, innovation etc., GMU is also talking about human resources development, which is crucial to develop and support the healthcare systems of the UAE and the Gulf. What I have seen at GMU is a very holistic approach. We look forward to build more opportunities for collaboration and cooperation.”

Her Excellency Ms. Riitta Swan said regarding the visit, “Visiting the Gulf Medical University has been a very pleasant experience. This is my second visit here, in the last 2-3 weeks, which shows our interest to cooperate with GMU. I can only admire what GMU has developed here, in all the fields like education, healthcare and research. I really hope we can find more and more opportunities to collaborate in these areas.”

Prof. Hossam Hamdy stressed the importance of continuous dialogue and relationship-building between GMU and healthcare institutions in Finland. He expressed GMU’s eagerness to explore areas of collaboration, in view of the remarkable accomplishments by Finland in several areas. He said, “GMU is building its state-of-the-art teaching hospital of 350 beds, raising the bed capacity of its teaching hospitals to 700 beds and 6 clinics and around 40 pharmacies. The new project includes the new dental hospital and the largest rehabilitation center in the UAE. Discussion is ongoing exploring the possibilities of bringing in Finnish expertise in developing and operating the rehabilitation center. We hope to follow this up with a visit to Finland, to meet counterparts, as we consider Finland as one of the leading countries in the areas of healthcare delivery, preventive medicine, health of the society, healthcare manpower development, doctors etc., to establish partnerships in different areas.”

Thumbay Hospital, the leading network of academic hospitals operated by the healthcare division of Thumbay Group UAE, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with global medical technologies provider Hill-Rom, for the purchase of 500 beds to support Thumbay Group’s upcoming healthcare projects in the Middle East and India, over the next 4 years.

The MoU was signed at the ‘Arab Health 2017’ exhibition at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Center, Dubai on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 by Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, vice president of the healthcare division of Thumbay Group and Mr. Hisham Hout, President – Middle East, Africa, Turkey and Indian Sub-continent of Hill-Rom.

Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay said that Hill-Rom would provide quality branded hospital beds, long-term care beds and surgical solutions apart from their other branded products to Thumbay Hospitals for the upcoming projects, according to the agreement. “All our equipment and infrastructure conform to international standards, which, combined with our expert team of caregivers, enables us to deliver world-class patient care,” he said.
