The Board of Governors of Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman headed by the Founder President Thumbay Moideen, appointed internationally renowned medical educator and pediatric surgeon Prof. Hossam Hamdy as the Chancellor of GMU, the leading private medical university in the region.

Prof. Hossam Hamdy, accompanied by Thumbay Moideen, Founder, President of Board of Governors of GMU, was granted audience with His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council, UAE and Ruler of Ajman, on Monday, January 30, 2017, where he was formally introduced to His Highness.

“Prof. Hossam Hamdy has joined GMU to help the University, to take it to a different level with his vast experience in the region. I am very confident that he will bring in international standards and new systems into the University,” said Thumbay Moideen, commenting on Prof. Hamdy’s appointment.

Speaking on his new role, Prof. Hossam Hamdy said, “I am pleased to join GMU. I look forward to having an exciting time supporting the journey of transition from a top-ranking medical University to a full-fledged Academic Healthcare System; a first-of-its-kind in the country.”

Prof. Hamdy, who has an enviable track-record as a renowned Professor of Surgery and Medical Education across leading medical institutions in the Gulf Region and worldwide, has been a distinguished scholar, professional, and leader in higher education in the Middle East for the last 40 years. He has established several Medical Colleges in Egypt, Bahrain, UAE, and Qatar, and brings with him a wealth of professional experience, having served in different senior academic and administrative positions; Vice Chancellor Medical & Health Science Colleges  – Sharjah University, Advisor to the President – Qatar University, Director of the Institute of Leadership in Higher Education, Dean College of Medicine and Medical Sciences – Arabian Gulf University, Bahrain and as WHO Consultant in Medical Education.  He is one of the founders of the Suez Canal University Medical College in Egypt, a leading institute of medical education in the region.

Prof. Hamdy is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal Medical Education, and Editorial Board of the Journal Health Profession Education. He is an avid researcher and has published more than 70 studies that are highly cited. He has introduced several innovations and best practices in Medical Education, and has received many awards like the Sheikh Khalifa Award for Higher Education for “Distinguished Professor in Teaching”. His efforts led the College of Medicine, Arabian Gulf University to win the “Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award” for Best Medical College in the Arab world. He was decorated by the Republic of France with the prestigious “Chevalier Dans L’ordre Des Palmes Academiques” / “Knight of the Order of Academic Palms” for his achievements.

Prof. Hamdy completed his MBChB and Doctorate of Surgery from Alexandria University, Egypt. He is Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Physicians of England. He did his Ph.D. in Medical Education from the University of Groningen, Netherland.

Ajman, January 30, 2017: In a bid to dramatically improve the UAE’s ability to conduct translational research that can lead to important applications for human health, Rashid Centre for Diabetes Research (RCDR) and Gulf Medical University (GMU) have joined hands to accelerate and expand research, education services and comprehensive care of diabetic patients.

The partnership was announced during a special lecture organized at GMU on, “Evolution of Clinical Research Unit at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City Ajman (SKMCA) and Future Strategies”, delivered by renowned Prof. Salahedeen Abusnana, Chief Medical Officer of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Ajman and Hospital Director of Rashid Center for Diabetes and Research on January 29, 2017.

“Research institutions in the UAE must join hands to exchange knowledge and initiate joint research programs to ensure that the country achieves international standards in combating diabetes and lifestyle diseases,” said Prof. Salahedeen Abusnana.

Outlining the research initiatives undertaken by SKMCA, Prof. Salahedeen added that as a leading medical university in the region with world-class facilities, GMU would make an ideal partner for SKMCA to empower education, training and healthcare activities. “To carry out successful research, it is imperative to define the research strategy, prioritize and stay focused. Unless institutions collaborate with each other, its research will lack direction. GMU partnering with SKMCA leads to mutually beneficial opportunities like developing specialized courses for nurses, paramedics and providing training programs to healthcare workforce.

Terming GMU’s facilities “fantastic” Prof. Salahedeen said that by bringing together the scientists, and clinician investigators from across the two centres, UAE will greatly expand the development of new technologies needed to tackle major health challenges.

The event was also attended by GMU Chancellor, Prof. Hossam Hamdy, Provost Prof. Gita Ashok Raj and deans of the various colleges under GMU.

Prof. Hamdy stated, “We are honored to develop a strategic alliance with Rashid Centre for Diabetes Research (RCDR) which has become a leading institute in the Gulf and across the globe for diabetes. GMU’s new strategic plan emphasizes the importance of collaborative work with all institutions in the field of academics, healthcare and research. Soon, GMU will become the fist-academic healthcare system in the UAE.”

Thanking Prof. Salahedeen’s gesture to conduct a high-profile lecture, Professor Hossam Hamdy, said:  “We are at an inflection point in research and training where looking at the big picture would transform UAE’s healthcare workforce, saving millions of lives. We believe that the creation of a new collaborative model can overcome many of the obstacles that currently prevent research breakthroughs. Working closely with Prof. Salahedeen’s team and more than 30 industry partners, the Gulf Medical University would be positioned to broadly disseminate discoveries and, most importantly, more rapidly deliver treatments to patients.”

Dubai: Grand draw winners of the ‘Golden Baby Campaign’, a unique initiative launched by Thumbay Group’s network of academic hospitals in association with Kalyan Jewellers, received their prizes at a grand ceremony organized in Thumbay Hospital, Dubai on January 28, 2017. The campaign, held from October 15 – December 15, 2016, across the Thumbay academic hospital network and Thumbay family clinics in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain, was organized with the aim of making every baby birth special and rewarding.

As part of the campaign, all those who had registered for childbirth at Thumbay Group’s hospitals and clinics during the campaign period (October 15-December 15, 2016), irrespective of their stages of pregnancy were given the assured win of two grams’ gold coin and unconditional diamond vouchers worth AED 250. In addition, the grand draw was conducted at the conclusion of the campaign period, to select five winners each for the grand prizes which included Kalyan Jewellers diamond necklaces worth AED 10,000, gold vouchers worth AED 5,000 and kids’ jewelry worth AED 1000.

The clinic’s Specialist Pediatrician – Dr.Sandeep Surendra Kanchan conducted health screening for around 72 children of the nursery, followed by an interactive session with their parents, on issues related to child health, development and nutrition.

The Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH) of Gulf Medical University (GMU) conducted an ‘Intensive Workshop on Clinical EKG’, at the University campus in Ajman on 13th and 14th January 2017.

The workshop accredited by MOHAP for 10.5 CME hours was conducted by Dr. Ehab. M. Esheiba, Head of Cardiology Department, Thumbay Hospital Ajman.

The workshop covered topics like EKG in CAD, Drug Effects, Electrolyte Imbalance & Metabolic Disorders, Pericardial, Myocardial and Pulmonary Diseases & Pre- Excitation Patterns, Arrhythmias, Pacemakers, Considerations / Limitations / Pitfalls.

This intensive workshop on clinical EKG interpretation aimed to extend and update the clinical EKG interpretation knowledge of health professionals who have a thorough basic understanding of EKG.

It provided an ideal opportunity to learn systematic approach interpret challenging 12 lead EKGs, as in complex arrhythmias, myocardial ischemia, and infarctions.

The main focus of the workshop was to assist the participants to achieve more advanced levels of electrocardiogram interpretation through brief Interactive lectures and discussions and to avoid common misconceptions through Pearls and Pitfalls, Tips and Tricks.

The participants at the workshop included doctors, interns, residents, nurses, paramedical staff and other healthcare professionals from reputed hospitals across the country.

United Arab Emirates, Sharjah: Mirroring a global trend aimed at making medical services more accessible, with high-quality care and reduced hospitalization hours for patients, Thumbay Hospital’s recently launched daycare services concept is fast catching-up in the UAE region. Mrs. Alia, a Pakistani national, who was suffering from a breast lump had been postponing the surgery for lack of medical leave. Akbar Moideen Thumbay Inducted into AUS Alumni Wall of Fame

Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President – Healthcare Division and board member of the Dubai-based international conglomerate Thumbay Group, has been inducted into the Alumni Wall of Fame of the American University of Sharjah (AUS), in recognition of his merit and professional accomplishments. The formal announcement was made at the at the University’s 10th Annual Alumni Reunion Dinner on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at the AUS campus.

The event, graced by the presence of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates, Ruler of Sharjah and President of AUS, saw the participation of more than 2,000 AUS alumni from all over the world. It is the event’s annual tradition to recognize those alumni who made a difference during their time at AUS as well as those who have achieved great success in their careers, by adding them to the Alumni Wall of Fame.  The honorees are chosen from a pool of candidates nominated by their fellow alumni.

Born on 18th March 1984 to Mr. Thumbay Moideen, a third generation business entrepreneur and Mrs. Zohra Moideen, a renowned artist in Mangalore, India, Akbar Moideen Thumbay completed his secondary education from the elite Indian academic institution, The Lawrence School, Lovedale, Ooty. After moving to the U.A.E. at the age of 15, he continued his studies with the International School of Choueifat in the UAE, and completed his graduation in Mechanical Engineering from American University of Sharjah (AUS). He later went on to continue his postgraduate studies in Hospital Management from the renowned SDA Boccioni School of Management, Milan, Italy.

After completing his studies and spending the first few months with a New York based company, Akbar joined Thumbay Group, the multinational business conglomerate founded by his father Thumbay Moideen, on a full-time basis. He demonstrated extraordinary business acumen and initiative from the word go. His vision, enthusiasm and confidence brought him greater responsibilities, and he was elevated to the position of the Vice-President of Thumbay Group’s Healthcare Division, on 1 November 2015.

Akbar looks after operations of all Thumbay Hospitals in Ajman, Fujairah, Sharjah, Dubai and Hyderabad (India), as well as the networks of Thumbay Clinics, and Thumbay Labs throughout the UAE and in India. Under the banner of the Retail Division, he initiated Nutri Plus Vita, a series of health nutrition and wellness store, in addition to the pre-existing branches of Zo & Mo Opticals and Thumbay Pharmacy located across the UAE. He is also credited of being the brain behind the Thumbay Marketing and Distribution Company (TMDC).
