Experts discuss strategies to strengthen “Brand UAE’s Medical Tourism” Vision 2021 at 3rd Annual Health & Medical Tourism Conference

Health & Medical Tourism Conference

The UAE is witnessing a boom in medical tourism, and a key focus on not only the clinical requirements but also hospitality requirements are needed to ensure medical tourists and their family members are comfortable, noted the 3rd Annual Health & Medical Tourism Conference held at Dusit Thani Hotel, Dubai on 24th November 2016.

Organized by the Gulf Medical University (GMU) in association with Thumbay Medical Tourism, the conference was a get-together of industry experts from healthcare, travel and medical education sectors, to discuss the latest trends and developments in medical tourism and to explore ways to capitalize on the UAE’s growing stature as a top medical tourism hub. The theme of the conference this year was “Health & Medical Tourism – Brand UAE; Nurturing Partnerships, Exploring Opportunities.”

Presided by Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group, the conference welcomed His Excellency, Dr. Amin Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Medical Practice and License Sector, Ministry of Health – UAE as the chief guest.  The thought-leadership conference was also attended by government officials, medical tourism experts and representatives from the embassies of Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, Angola, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Chad, Djibouti, Cameroon, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.

Speaking on the sidelines of the potential growth in the medical tourism sector, Amin Al Amiri said, “The UAE is looking to double or triple the number of medical tourists in the coming five years. To ensure best-practices, we are cautiously introducing patented medicines approved by USFDA (the US Food and Drug Administration and other agencies] to ensure highest quality care and medicines are provided, and draw patients from across the globe to UAE as medical tourists and get their treatment in the emirates.”

The conference also noted that technology would lead the way in future for Medical Tourism. The country’s strategic geographic location at the heart of Asia and Africa, connecting the east to the west – along with its plethora of low-cost flights, affordable accommodation, and attractive neighboring tourist cities – will be enough to tip the increasingly competitive battle for medical tourism in UAE’s favour, experts said.

Similarly, Mr Thumbay Moideen pointed out, “Domestic medical tourism has been growing significantly, and with the ease of information accessible on the internet, we’ve seen an increased element of choice. Moreover, the city’s growing popularity of being conducive to a family experience for those coming in for healthcare has been a big contributing factor. We understand that people have strong images of UAE as a tourism hub, but we are here to say that we now have world-class medical facilities too.”

Delivering the keynote at the conference, Ms. Linda Abdullah Al Ali, Head of Medical Tourism Office, Health Regulation Department, DHA said that the country was well-equipped to serve its increasing numbers of medical tourists, with Dubai alone expected to see more than 500,000 medical tourists by 2020. “The UAE has turned into a hub for medical tourism and it has worked very hard to achieve this status. Both the public and private sectors have been rolling out plans to build more hospitals, train medical staff and recruit highly-qualified expatriate doctors and medical staff to deliver the quality services. The healthcare infrastructure in the UAE has grown and stretched in a manner that could be compared with those of advanced countries,” she added.

Leading medical tourism experts were presented with special awards at the conference. The conference also featured expert talks on the emerging trends and opportunities in medical tourism. Topics included: Emerging Opportunities and Challenges of Medical Tourism in the UAE, Healthcare Marketing Strategies for Medical Tourism Sector, New Destination Branding in Medical Tourism – What Matters, Contributing to the Success of UAE Medical Tourism – Thumbay Medical Tourism Experience, Medical Tourism Insurance, Contribution of Specialized Educational Institute (Gulf Medical University) in Promoting Medical Tourism in the UAE.

A round table meeting, moderated by Dr. Anil Bankar (Assistant Professor, Medical Tourism, College of Allied Health Sciences, GMU) and Dr. Benazir Ameer Ali (Director, Thumbay Medical Tourism) discussed the strategies to position UAE as a leading brand in medical tourism’. Dr. Layla Al Marzouqi (Director, Health Regulation Department, Dubai Health Authority), Dr. Saif Al Jaibeji (CEO Middle East & Africa, UnitedHealth Group) and representatives from the various embassies took part in the discussions.

H.E. Dr. Hussein Al Amiri awarded certificates to the graduates of the ‘Medical Tourism Facilitator’ course of Gulf Medical University. Formally launched last year, the course is a first-of-its-kind in the region to nurture medical tourism professionals with the requisite skills to act as the focal point of the process, by linking overseas patients to medical providers and looking into their travel, transportation and tourism needs.

Surgeon saves patient’s eyesight by removing brain tumor through nostrils

Surgeon saves patient’s eyesight by removing brain tumor through nostrils

September 28, 2016, Ajman (UAE): A 34-year-old patient working as a crane operator has undergone a remarkable new procedure of surgery at Thumbay Hospital that allows the brain tumor to be removed through the nose.

Menhaj Khan first noticed something was wrong when his eyesight began to diminish, first the right eye, followed by the left eye. Although he had ignored his frequent bouts of headache for the last two years, the 34-year-old visited an ophthalmologist within two months of discovering the vision deterioration. He was told that there was nothing wrong with the eyes. He was later referred to Thumbay Hospital Dubai, where an MRI scan of the brain revealed that he had a large tumor on pituitary gland, pressing on the optic apparatus of brain and also hypothalamus, a very vital part of brain. This tumor was pressing on his optic nerves, causing him to slowly lose his sight.

Conventionally, such operations require surgeons to open the skull – a procedure known as a craniotomy. Moreover, affected portions of the brain are reached via major incisions in the side of the face or inside the mouth, leaving behind major scars of the surgery. However, to patient surprise, Dr. Ishwar Chandra Premsagar, consultant neurosurgeon at Thumbay Hospital (Dubai) said that they can remove the growth by sucking it out through his nose. An ear nose and throat (ENT) surgeon and an eye surgeon were consulted to plan the surgery and save further deterioration of vision while providing a chance for complete recovery. The patient, thus, underwent endoscopic trans-nasal trans-sphenoidal surgery, where the tumor was removed through the nose by endoscopic surgery without any cut or stitches on the skin. The father-of-five-kids has now made a full recovery, with improved vision, after the operation at Thumbay Hospital this September (2016).

Speaking about his battle with this brain tumor, he noticed loss of vision which was just within a time span of two months. He was turning practically blind and he couldn’t read anything. If the patient would have allowed the illness to remain untreated for much longer or not consulted the neurosurgeon at Thumbay Hospital, he would have gone blind. But, yes, looking back, there had been other symptoms like frequent headaches which he ignored, believing that the crane operating job is taxing and it’s nothing but getting tired.

The neurosurgeon, who conducted the surgery, Dr. Ishwar Chandra Premsagar, explained: “The endoscope provides a close-up view of the pituitary, allowing the surgeon to remove the entire tumor out in one go through the nostrils, causing no disfigurement or damage to the brain. On the other hand, the procedure ensures far less danger of brain damage or stroke, and the patient usually makes a quicker recovery. Although post-surgery, deterioration of vision stops, but one cannot guarantee complete recovery of vision. This patient was lucky as his vision improved, but it may not happen in all patients. Hence, it is extremely important that one should ensure early consultation, diagnosis and surgery to ensure high chances of recovery.”

Patient has noticed improvement in his vision as soon as he came out of the anesthesia on the same day.  By the end of the week, he could read too. The patient was highly thankful for the great job of the doctors for their proactive support and creative thinking and also Thumbay hospital for providing quality care. Physically, now, he is feeling better than before.
