Basic Surgical Skills Workshop

The Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH) at Gulf Medical University, Ajman hosted the 16th Basic Surgical Skills Workshop on October 31, 2014.

Professor Manda Venkatramana, Director of the Center and Dean, College of Medicine inaugurated the workshop and delivered the welcome address. He briefed about the various activities conducted at the state-of-art Simulation Center including the AHA accredited basic and advanced life support courses. The Director further elaborated that the major beneficiary of this facility has been GMU students as simulation-based learning has been seamlessly integrated into the curriculum of various programs. He said that simulation-based learning is considered one of the best practices in current day medical education.  He concluded by listing the objectives of the workshop and wished the delegates a great learning experience.

Dr. Pradeep K. Sharma, Specialist Surgeon and Associate Professor, delivered interactive lectures on “Surgeons and Sutures” and “Principles of Wound Management.”


The highlights of the workshop were the small-group hands-on sessions on ‘Suturing Techniques’ facilitated by Dr. Pradeep KS, ‘Knotting Techniques’ by Dr. Nishida C, Lecturer in Anatomy, ‘Sterile Techniques’ by Mr. Gigeesh George, Surgical Skills Instructor and  ‘Universal Precautions’ led by Mr. Aboobakker KV, Nursing Skills Instructor.


The workshop provided an opportunity for the participants to get a one-to-one hands-on experience of basic surgical skills in a realistic, safe, error-forgiving and controlled environment. The course followed the current international guidelines for universal precautions, hand-washing, surgical scrubbing, operating theater protocol, knotting and suturing techniques. Over 34 doctors, medical students and nurses from different emirates participated in the intensive workshop which was accredited by the Ministry of Health, UAE for 5 CME Hrs.


Designed as a virtual hospital setting, CASH is a multidisciplinary educational facility that provides high-tech simulated set-up for clinical and communication skills teaching / learning and training for all health care professionals. CASH offers Training Programs to doctors, nurses, other health professionals and lay public as well.


The participants highly appreciated the conducive, reflective and encouraging environment of the sessions as reported in the post-workshop feedback. CASH plans to conduct more such sessions in the future.


UAE presently ranked 16th as a preferred destination for Medical Tourism, has the potential to be in top five says expert. Ms. Renee Marie-Stephano President of Medical Tourism Association said there may be new demand trends for treatments and destinations in medical travel. However there are untapped niche target market opportunities within medical tourism she says.


The first International medical Tourism conference was organized by Thumbay Hospital (part of Thumbay Group and GMC hospital) in Dubai on 21 Nov 2014. The new hospital is due to open in December 2014 / January 2015.

The theme of the conference was Initiatives and Updates on International Medical Tourism in UAE. The event was attended by over 150 delegates including medical tourism experts, doctors, facilitators and insurance agencies.

Founder President of Thumbay Group Mr. Thumbay Moideen was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He awarded Special Awards of Honor and Recognition to Ms. Renee Marie Stephano, President Medical Tourism Association USA, Dr. Uma Nambiar, Advisor to Ministry of Health Djibouti, Mr. Ajmal Habeeb, Managing Director Unity Hospitals India, Dr. Ibrahim Abu Gharbieh, MD Salamatek Healthcare Management UAE and Dr. Benazir Ameer Ali, Director International Medical and Health Tourism Department Thumbay Hospital for their valuable contributions to Medical Tourism. Citing exhaustively from the findings of a survey conducted by MTA, Ms. Renee said, Nearly 80% of demand for medical travel is driven by cost savings, Cosmetic surgery leads all other treatments, representing 38% of demand, About 92% of total spending on medical travel per patient is less than $30,000, Medical tourists spend between $7,475 and $15,833 per medical travel trip, For 6 million patients, medical travel may contribute $45 – $95 billion to global GDP, Latin America and Asia are the two leading regions for medical travel, Mexico and India respectively have the highest demand for medical tourism and almost 76% of patients with a future interest in medical travel are American.

She recommended that collaboration with stakeholders to conduct annual global market research and to institute policies to expand various markets within medical tourism industry. Collaborate to develop healthcare hubs as a part of regional economic integration she concluded.

According to Dr. Benazir Ameer Ali Medical Tourism is now perceived as one of the fastest growing segment in healthcare. The recent trend is for patients to travel from developed countries to third world countries for medical treatment because of cost consideration, waiting time, privacy/confidentiality, though the traditional pattern still continues. Technology will lead the way in future Medical Tourism. Thumbay Hospital Dubai hosts a Seminar on Recent Trends in Medicine as part of Doctors Meet 2014

Thumbay Hospital honors leading Specialists from all over UAE during the event attended by over 2000 people including 800 doctors and healthcare professionals.

The leading healthcare provider in UAE, Thumbay Hospital Dubai (part of Thumbay Group and GMC hospital) hosted the Seminar on Recent Trends in Medicine as part of Doctors Meet 2014. The new hospital is due to open in December 2014 / January 2015.


In his welcome note Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Director Operations – Healthcare and Retail Divisions, Thumbay Group UAE said that the visionary zeal of the founder president Mr. Thumbay Moideen laid the foundation for the establishment of Gulf Medical University and GMC hospitals, now known as Thumbay Hospitals, which today are leaders in Education and Healthcare. Balagopal – Specialist in Gastroenterology. The seminar was accredited by the Ministry of Health for 6 CME hours.

GMU hosts 11th Convocation Ceremony at Ajman Kempinski.

His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council, UAE and Ruler of Ajman conferred the degrees on 90 graduates including 6 students from Master’s Programs of Gulf Medical University during the 11th GMU Convocation that was held on 19th November 2014 at Ajman Kempinski Hotel & Resort.


H.H. Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi congratulated the graduates for their academic achievement. “This event signifies that each of the students has demonstrated the required intellectual ability and the personal qualities of hard work, perseverance and accomplishment to attain a special mark of recognition”, he said.

Addressing the students, the president congratulated them on their achievement and said “As you step into your future, you must keep in mind the learning and training that was imparted to you at the university and try to build on such knowledge to attain more professional competency. Out of a total of 90 graduates who received their graduation certificates from His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, 48 graduates from the College of Medicine (MBBS), 9 graduates from College of Allied Health Sciences (BPT), 19 from College of Dentistry (DMD) and 9 from College of Pharmacy (Pharm D) apart from 02 graduates from Master of Science in Clinical Pathology (MS CP), 3 graduates from Master of Toxicology (MS Tox) received their graduation certificates during the ceremony.
