Dubai: In a prestigious ceremony held at Taj Palace Hotel in Dubai, Gulf Medical University bagged awards in seven distinctive categories at the recently concluded Asian Education Leadership Awards, held under the broad banner of the Asian Leadership Awards (ALA).

GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITY SWEEPS ALL MAJOR AWARDS AT ASIAN EDUCATION LEADERSHIP AWARDSIt was almost a clean sweep in the medical and healthcare education categories, as GMU won awards for Award for Best Educational Institute in Medical Education, Best Educational Institute in Pharmacy (College of Pharmacy), Best Educational Institute in Dentistry (College of Dentistry), Best Educational Institute in Allied Health Sciences (College of Allied Health Sciences). The Deans of the respective colleges collected the awards.

But for his constant encouragement and support, such a feat would not have been possible. Gulf Medical University was rated as one of the top 100 best educational institutions in Asia earlier this year. Thumbay Group was earlier named as the Emirates Business Ambassador for Healthcare and Education.

He thanked the President and Provost for their guidance and said that the College of Medicine has introduced many new programs for the first time in the region, and thus enriched the knowledge economy of the nation.

We feel elated that our efforts have been recognized, says Dr. Arun Shirwaikar, Dean College of Pharmacy. This will make us work harder to raise our standards further, he added.

I am very grateful and obliged for this prestigious award conferred to College of Allied Health Sciences, GMU said Mr. Praveen Kumar, Associate Dean College of Allied health Sciences, GMU. He thanked the President and the Provost for their dynamic leadership and never ending support and guidance. A special note of thanks and appreciation to all the team members of the college for their support and organizational skills in the successful conduction of the programs, he added.

This is a very special award for our college. It is a testimony to our hard work and innovative teaching and training of our students. We will continue with our best efforts and bring more laurels to the college and our university, said a highly elated Dean College of Dentistry Prof. Mohamed Said Hamed.

Gulf Medical University has developed a reputation for providing programs that had been introduced in the region for the first time. The university attracts students from over 70 countries who pursue their studies at the university. Faculty and staff from over 22 countries are working in the institution. GMU has won numerous recognitions and accolades, including being rated as one of Asia’s 100 Best & Fastest Growing Private Education Institutions, and presented with an award during the Asian Education Excellence Summit 2014 in India recently.

Promoted by Thumbay Group UAE, GMU offers MBBS, BPT, DMD, PharmD and Masters Programs in Clinical Pathology, Public Health, and Toxicology. GMU is first in the region to launch unique programs like Masters in Human Reproductive Biology, Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences and Masters in Physical Therapy. GMU Testing Center is the latest addition to the ever-growing facilities of the university. Apart from Gulf Medical University, faculty and departments from leading universities in United Arab Emirates like UAE University, Ajman University of Science & Technology, University of Sharjah, American University of Sharjah, Canadian University of Dubai, British University in Dubai, Al Ghurair University, Abu Dhabi University, and American University in Dubai have also won the awards.

ALA is hosted annually by Asian Confederation of Business in association with promoters of the World CSR Day. Over 300 delegates participated in the function. Among the participants were leading institutions from various industries from Asia. Distinguished luminaries and senior government officials among others were present at the event as award winners and guests of honour.

The awards recognize remarkable business leaders and organizations in Asia for their continuing commitment to excellence, developing best practices and innovative strategies. Leading educational institutions from India, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates were awarded in other categories at this year’s awards.

Sheikh Dr. Majid Bin Saeed Al Nuaimi, Chairman, Ruler’s Court, Ajman.  Mr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President Board of Governors Gulf Medical University presided over the function.

Besides highlighting about the portals of collegiality she also recommended the students to follow diversity of thoughts, value and communication skills.

New students cloaked in their first white coats, collectively recited the GMU Honor Code. They assumed the mantle of their profession in a meaningful ritual before an audience of mentors, family and friends. The ceremony is designed to impress upon the first-year students, the significance and symbolism of the white coat.

BHS in Anesthesia & Surgical Technology is introduced for the first time in the country.

Later, His Highness Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi visited the Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation (CABRI) and inaugurated the Complete Automation Project.  CABRI is one of the most advanced laboratories in the region.

CROWN PRINCE OF AJMAN INITIATES NEW BATCH OF STUDENTS INTO HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONS AT GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITYThe Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation will focus on research studies and advanced diagnostics in nationally important health areas like Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, Genetic Disorders, Allergies and Thalassemia says Dr. P K Menon, MD PhD. who heads the Center as its Director. We are keen to work with the industry and carry out industry sponsored research and generate Intellectual Property Rights. We are already working with some of the multinational companies on various research projects. We want to focus on diagnostic testing. The Center has, in addition, the ability to do bio analytical testing, toxicology testing and rare metal analysis, explained Dr. Menon. The Center aims to be a leading service provider for High Complexity Testing in the next 3-5 years. We want to replace dependency of UAE on foreign labs. We wish to develop critical manpower within the country, so that UAE becomes a leader of medical research and diagnostics in the region” said Dr. Menon.

The Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation will raise the current undergraduate facility to a higher pedestal as a postgraduate facility, predominantly focusing on graduate studies and medical research.  The Center will encourage and nurture our students and faculty members to be active in research. The Center plans to launch inter-institutional collaboration within UAE and abroad. We will also launch a Graduate Lecture Series program. We are also seeking accreditation from the College of American Pathologists, concluded Dr. Menon.

More than 6500 people thronged the hospitals, most of them came from labor camps and industries in Ajman, Sharjah, RAK, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, said Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Director Healthcare Operations of Thumbay Group.

MORE THAN 6500 PEOPLE BENEFITED FROM FREE MEGA HEALTH CAMP in GMC Hospitals in Ajman, Sharjah and FujairahIn addition to this, free Blood Pressure Checkup, Blood Sugar Checkup; BMI Checkups were carried out to create awareness about diabetes and hypertension which has a high incidence in the region. The visitors were also offered free medicines besides the 50% discount on Laboratory and Radiology (X-ray, CT, Ultrasound etc.) investigations.  Patients can avail the Follow-up check-ups for free in the next 15 days.  As part of the hospital promotion free medicines, informative brochures, health packages, were distributed to the visitors.

We have witnessed a distinct increase in Surgery, Orthopedics and Ophthalmology cases in this camp, informed Dr. Manish Singhal, hospital administrator. Simulated Diabetic Clinic: Educating novice health professionals to prevent and treat diabetes

As per the World Health Organization (WHO) there is an emerging global epidemic of diabetes that can be traced back to rapid increase in obesity and physical inactivity.Educating and Inculcating the importance of prevention, early detection and management of this silent killer in our future doctors is of prime importance.

The Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH)  conducted a hands on training  workshop:”Simulated  Diabetic Clinic” with zones dedicated to simulate  Primary Healthcare screening rooms, Diabetic Wellness Clinic for Diet and Life style counseling and  Diagnosis and Management Clinics.

Simulated Diabetic Clinic: Educating novice health professionals to prevent and treat diabetesDr .Mohammad Sobhy, Specialist Surgeon and Lecturer ,GMC Hospital, Ajman ; facilitated the skills development session on Diabetic patient examination with primary focus on Diabetic foot on the high fidelity patient simulator where the patient was in the in-patient simulated ward set up , he was a  38 year old chronic uncontrolled diabetic with advanced arterial disease and neuropathy resulting in a large infected foot ulcer on the right foot.
